The Ascension of Jesus: A Reflection
“Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.” Luke 24:50-53
The Ascension of Jesus is not just about His departure from earth; it is about His exaltation and His ongoing presence in our lives. When Jesus ascended into heaven, He did not abandon us. Rather, He completed His earthly mission and entrusted us with the continuation of His work. His Ascension reminds us of three key truths:
- Our Ultimate Destination is Heaven
Jesus’ Ascension directs our eyes beyond earthly concerns to our eternal home. We are not meant to stay rooted in the temporary things of this world but to live with an awareness that we are pilgrims journeying toward heaven. - We Are Commissioned to Be Christ’s Witnesses
Before ascending, Jesus commanded His disciples to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). This mission is ours as well. Christ’s physical presence may have left the earth, but through the Holy Spirit, He works through us. - We Are Not Alone
Jesus ascended to the Father, but He did not leave us orphaned. He promised the Holy Spirit, who strengthens and guides us. The Ascension assures us that Christ intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father (Romans 8:34), and through the Spirit, He remains with us always.
How can we allow the mystery of the Ascension to shape our everyday lives? Here are some practical ways:
- Live with a Heaven-Focused Mindset: Let the hope of heaven guide your daily choices. Instead of being consumed by material concerns, cultivate an eternal perspective. Ask yourself: Does this choice bring me closer to Christ and my ultimate home in heaven?
- Be Christ’s Witness in Your Sphere of Influence: Whether at work, in your family, or in your community, strive to reflect the love and truth of Jesus. This can be through acts of kindness, sharing your faith, or simply being a person of integrity and compassion.
- Rely on the Holy Spirit: Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to empower us. Take time to pray each day for the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Before making decisions, pause and ask: Holy Spirit, lead me in truth and wisdom.
- Embrace Joyful Worship: Just as the disciples rejoiced and worshiped after Jesus’ Ascension, we too should cultivate a spirit of worship and thanksgiving. Engage in personal and communal prayer, attend Mass with gratitude, and nurture a heart of praise.
- Trust in Christ’s Intercession: When facing struggles, remember that Jesus is at the right hand of the Father interceding for you. Offer your burdens to Him and find peace in knowing that He is always with you.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, as You ascended into heaven, You did not leave us alone but promised to be with us always. Help us to live with our hearts set on heaven while faithfully carrying out Your mission here on earth. Strengthen us through the Holy Spirit, and may our lives be a witness to Your love and truth. Amen.
