Praying Through Singing

When I received an email asking me to write a reflection, my immediate thought was…sure…that will be easy…I can write on praying through music.  Now that I am trying to put my thoughts down, I find myself struggling.

One thing about me is that I love spending time outside on my patio.  So when I prepared to write this, of course I went to the coziest spot on my patio, put on my headphones, keyed up my all-time favorite song and began to reflect.

  • My life is in your hands
  • My heart is in your keeping

These are such beautiful words…so comforting…the notes flowing through my head.  Kathy Troccoli wrote this song back in the mid 90’s.  It is still so relevant today.  I close my eyes and let myself be transported to that place of peace and comfort that only God’s love can give me.

Without even knowing why, I realize I am feeling unsettled, almost anxious.  But, why?  Then I realize that the TV is on in the background.  The News…..election results….Covid numbers….the Dow.  Oh my goodness, all this going on………….where do I fit in with all of this???

  • My Life is in Your Hands
  • My Heart Is In Your Keeping
  • I’m Never Without Hope
  • Not When My Future Is With You

Now, more than any other time in my life, have I felt so shaken with problems that I have no control over.  I was always taught that the Lord helps those who help themselves.  And, I believe I am doing what I can.  I did my civic duty.  I voted.  I wear a mask.  I saved for retirement.  So now what?  What else can I do?

Isaiah 41:10:   So do not fear for I am with you, do not be dismayed for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you.  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Ephesians 5:19:  Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit.  Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.

So I KNOW…. God has got this…He has it all handled.  God Helps Those Who Help Themselves.  God Helps Those……  I know this…..in my head I know this.   But, when the doubt creeps in, and my heart feels heavy with anxiety, I fall back on one of the best gifts He has ever given me. The Gift of Singing… LOUD!  And the songs say the words that I don’t know how to write but say exactly what I feel.  How awesome is that!

So, try it!   Find a cozy spot,  key up your favorite inspirational song.  Sing loud.  Let the notes fill your head and flood your heart.  I say it’s better than a yoga class!!!

  • My Life Is In Your Hands
  • My Heart Is In Your Keeping
  • I’m Never Without Hope
  • Not When My Future Is With You
  • My Life Is In Your Hands
  • And Though I May Not See Clearly
  • I Will Lift My Voice and Sing
  • For Your Love Does Amazing Things
  • Lord I Know My Life Is In Your Hands

Amen.
