A Summer Spirituality:
Deepening Our Relationship with Jesus
Summer often brings a welcome change of pace.
Schedules loosen, routines shift, and there is more space for rest, travel, and time outdoors. Yet, in the midst of this freedom, something subtle can happen: our spiritual lives can drift. Prayer becomes less consistent, Scripture or spiritual reading is set aside, and Sunday worship can feel optional. Without intention, our relationship with Jesus can grow quiet.
But summer does not have to be a season of spiritual complacency, it can become a season of spiritual renewal.
In the Gospels, we see that Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray. He embraced moments away from the crowds not as distractions, but as opportunities for deeper communion with the Father. Summer offers us a similar invitation. With its slower rhythms, it provides a unique opportunity to intentionally deepen our relationship with Him.
A “summer spirituality” begins with a simple decision: not to let our faith become seasonal, but to let it grow.
- Renewing Prayer
With more flexible time, we can rediscover prayer not as an obligation, but as a relationship. Whether it’s a few quiet moments in the morning, a walk in nature while speaking to God, or a pause in the evening to reflect on the day, prayer anchors us. It reminds us that God is not distant; He is present, attentive, and loving. Consistent prayer brings clarity, peace, and a deeper awareness of God’s action in our lives. - Returning to Scripture
Summer is also an ideal time to engage Scripture more intentionally. Even reading a small passage each day can reorient the heart. The Word of God is not just information—it is living and active. It shapes our thoughts, challenges our assumptions, and draws us closer to Christ. Over time, Scripture forms us into people who think, love, and act more like Jesus. - Remaining Faithful to Sunday Worship
It can be tempting during summer travels or busy weekends to step away from Sunday worship. Yet gathering for worship is essential. It reconnects us to Christ in a profound way and roots us in the community of believers. Far from being a burden, it is a source of grace, strength, and renewal. When we remain faithful, we stay grounded in what truly sustains us.
The Fruits of a Summer Rooted in Christ
When we choose to invest in our spiritual lives during the summer, the benefits are real and lasting. We grow in peace rather than restlessness, in purpose rather than distraction. Our relationship with Jesus becomes more personal and alive. We begin to see our daily experiences—vacation, rest, relationships—as places where God is present and active.
Rather than drifting through the season, we become attentive to grace.
Summer will pass, as all seasons do. But if we use it well, we will not return unchanged. We will enter the next season of life more grounded, more aware of God, and more deeply rooted in Christ.
The invitation is simple: don’t let summer pull you away from Jesus—let it draw you closer to Him.
