Faithful to Your Call
|
If you live a life of watching and waiting, you will know what kind of call you have. You are not called to solve every problem in the world. Jesus was not called to go all over the world. He was called to be faithful to his own people. Every human being has a call. I work with mentally handicapped people. Sometimes I spend hours with one person, and we barely speak. Does that help people in Bosnia, does that help people in Northern Ireland, does it help people in Somalia? I don't know, but I think it does. I think that when I am faithful to one person who is given to me, when I am convinced that's my vocation, then I am doing more than when I am anxiously trying to put out all the fires all over the world. And that gives me peace.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, August 30, the 22nd in Ordinary Time is Jeremiah 20:7-9. Here is a reflection on the passage.
This passage gives us a deeply honest picture of faith. Jeremiah feels overwhelmed. He has tried to speak God’s word, yet his faithfulness has brought him ridicule and rejection. He even reaches the point where he says he will not speak God’s name anymore.
But then Jeremiah says something powerful: “But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.”
Faith, sometimes, is not easy. There are moments when we may feel discouraged, tired, disappointed, or even frustrated with God. Jeremiah reminds us being faithful does not mean we never struggle. It means that even in our struggle, God continues to work within us.
The “fire” in Jeremiah’s heart is God’s presence—a presence he cannot simply shut out. God’s call is stronger than Jeremiah’s discouragement. Perhaps we need to hear that today. When we are tired, God is still present. When we are discouraged, God has not abandoned us. When we feel like giving up, the Holy Spirit can rekindle the fire within us.
We do not have to pretend that faith is always easy. Like Jeremiah, we can bring our frustration and questions honestly to God. And then we can pray: “Lord, when my faith grows tired, keep your fire burning within me. Give me the courage to remain faithful.”
