A Reflection
for Your Weekend
from Henri Nouwen

You Are Accepted

The first love says, “I loved you before you could love anyone or before you could receive love from anyone. I have accepted you. You are accepted. You are loved no matter what mother, father, brother, sister, school, church, society does. You are born out of my love. I have breathed you out of my love. I have spoken you out of my love. You are the incarnation of my love and in me there is no hatred, there is no revenge, there is no resentment. There is nothing that wants to reject you. I love you. Can you trust that love? The original love is the original blessing. The original love is the original acceptance.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, August 9, the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time is 1 Kings 19:19a, 11-13a. Here is a reflection on the passage.

We live in a noisy world. There is always something demanding our attention—phones, television, social media, work, family responsibilities, worries about the future. Sometimes the noise around us becomes so great that we can no longer hear what is happening within us—or what God may be saying to us.

In Sunday’s reading, Elijah is looking for God. First comes a powerful wind, but God is not in the wind. Then an earthquake, but God is not in the earthquake. Then a fire, but God is not in the fire. And finally, Elijah hears “a tiny whispering sound.” It is there, in the quiet, that Elijah recognizes the presence of God.

How often do we make the mistake of looking for God only in the dramatic moments of life? We may expect God to speak through a miracle, a major change, or some unmistakable sign. Yet this passage reminds us that God often comes to us quietly.

God may speak through a Scripture passage that suddenly touches our heart. He may speak through a friend who says exactly what we need to hear. He may speak in the silence of prayer, in the beauty of creation, or through a gentle prompting in our hearts to forgive, to serve, to be patient, or to begin again.

The challenge is that we cannot hear a whisper when our lives are filled with noise. Perhaps one of the spiritual disciplines we need most is learning to become quiet before God. We don't always need to fill every moment with activity. Sometimes we simply need to sit in God's presence and say, “Lord, I am here. Help me to hear You.” And notice what Elijah does when he hears the voice of God: he goes out and stands at the entrance of the cave. He responds. Hearing God is not simply about receiving a comforting message. It is about allowing God's voice to change the way we live. So this week, create a little space for silence. Put down the phone. Turn off the television. Take a quiet walk. Sit for five minutes before the Lord. Don't worry about finding the perfect words. Simply listen.

Please pray for those who are struggling to provide for themselves and their families. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday for service at 10:00 a.m.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
