A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend by Henri Nouwen
|
Rest in God’s Peace
Your main question should always be whether something is lived with or without God. You have your own inner knowledge to answer that question. Every time you do something that comes from your needs for acceptance, affirmation, or affection, and every time you do something that makes these needs grow, you know that you are not with God. These needs will never be satisfied; they will only increase when you yield to them. But every time you do something for the glory of God, you will know God's peace in your heart and find rest there.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, May 10, the Sixth Sunday of Easter is John 14:15-21. Here is a reflection on the passage.
In John 14:15–21, Jesus speaks words that are both comforting and challenging. He says plainly: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Love, in the Christian life, is not just a feeling—it is expressed through faithful obedience. This can be difficult, especially in a world that often prioritizes personal preference over truth. Yet Jesus shows us that real love is rooted in commitment, trust, and action.
At the same time, Jesus does not leave us to live this calling on our own. He promises the “Advocate,” the Holy Spirit, who will remain with us forever. This is a profound assurance: we are not abandoned. Even when we struggle to live out Christ’s commands, the Spirit is present to guide, strengthen, and remind us of who we are in God’s eyes.
Jesus also says, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” These words speak directly to the human fear of being alone or forgotten. In Christ, we are never alone. Through the Spirit, Jesus is present in our daily lives—in our decisions, our struggles, and our joys.
|
This passage invites us to examine our own lives:
|
- Do I show my love for Christ through the way I live?
- Am I open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
- Do I truly believe that Jesus is present with me each day?
As we continue through the Easter season, this Gospel calls us to deepen our relationship with Christ—not just in words, but in the way we live. When we strive to follow His commandments and remain open to the Spirit, we begin to experience the promise Jesus makes: a life lived in communion with Him, never abandoned, always loved.
