A Spiritual Reflection
for Your Weekend
by Henri Nouwen

Rest in God’s Peace

Your main question should always be whether something is lived with or without God. You have your own inner knowledge to answer that question. Every time you do something that comes from your needs for acceptance, affirmation, or affection, and every time you do something that makes these needs grow, you know that you are not with God. These needs will never be satisfied; they will only increase when you yield to them. But every time you do something for the glory of God, you will know God's peace in your heart and find rest there.

Today, Friday, May 1,
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Dinner will be served.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, May 1 Fifth Sunday of Easter is: John 14:1-12. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In Gospel of John 14:1–12, Jesus Christ speaks words that meet us in moments of uncertainty: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.”

He does not deny that life brings confusion, fear, and even suffering. Instead, He invites trust—trust not in circumstances, but in Him.

Jesus reveals something profound about His identity and mission: “I am the way and the truth and the life.”

This is not merely a teaching among many; it is a claim that all meaning, direction, and life itself are found in relationship with Him. For Christians, faith is not just adherence to ideas—it is a living relationship with the One who leads us to the Father.

When Philip the Apostle asks to see the Father, Jesus responds with a gentle correction: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

In other words, God is not distant or hidden. In Jesus, God’s heart is made visible—His mercy, His compassion, His desire to draw close to humanity.

Jesus also speaks of trust in action: “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do.”

This can seem overwhelming, but it is really an invitation. Through grace, Christians are called to continue Christ’s work in the world—loving, serving, forgiving, and witnessing to truth. The “greater works” He promises are not about personal greatness, but about the power of God working through ordinary people who trust Him.

Where is your heart troubled right now? Jesus does not ask you to solve everything—He asks you to trust Him within it. To believe that He is the way, even when the path is unclear. To believe that in knowing Him, you are not far from God but drawn into His very life.

Practical Application
  • Bring one specific worry to prayer and consciously place it in Christ’s hands.
  • Spend time with the words of this passage, letting Jesus’ promise “Do not let your hearts be troubled” speak directly to you.
  • Look for one concrete way to reflect Christ today—through patience, kindness, or forgiveness—trusting that even small acts participate in His greater work.
In a world that often feels uncertain, Jesus offers not just answers, but Himself—the way, the truth, and the life.

May your weekend be blessed! If you are in town, we look forward to seeing you for Service on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
