A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend by Henri Nouwen
|
The Lord’s Reassuring Voice
|
Though we think of ourselves as followers of Jesus, we are often seduced by the fearful questions the world presents to us. Without fully realizing it, we become anxious, nervous, worrying people caught in the questions of survival: our own survival, the survival of our families, friends, and colleagues, the survival of our church, our country, and our world. Once these fearful survival questions become the guiding questions of our lives, we tend to dismiss words spoken from the house of love as unrealistic, romantic, sentimental, pious, or just useless. When love is offered as an alternative to fear we say: “Yes, yes, that sounds beautiful, but...” But is it possible in the midst of this fear-provoking world to live in the house of love and listen there to the questions raised by the Lord of love? Or are we so accustomed to living in fear we have become deaf to the voice that says: “Do not be afraid.” This reassuring voice, which repeats over and over again: “Do not be afraid, have no fear,” is the voice we most need to hear.

Arrive to Sunday Service prepared to hear God’s Word proclaimed.
The reading for this Sunday, April 26, Fourth Sunday of Easter is: John 10:1-10. Here is a reflection on the passage.
In John 10:1–10, Jesus presents Himself as both the Good Shepherd and the gate for the sheep—a powerful image rooted in trust, protection, and belonging.
In a world filled with competing voices, Jesus contrasts Himself with “thieves and robbers,” those influences that promise life but ultimately lead us away from truth and fullness.
His voice, however, is different. It is personal. It calls each sheep by name. This passage invites us to ask: whose voice are we listening to? The voice of Christ is not coercive or confusing—it is steady, recognizable, and life-giving. Yet to hear it clearly, we must cultivate familiarity through prayer, Scripture, and silence. Just as sheep learn the voice of their shepherd over time, so too are we formed by consistent relationship with Jesus.
Jesus also declares, “I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved… and will find pasture.” He is not merely a guide; He is the very way into life with God. Through Him, we are led into safety, nourishment, and rest. This reminds us that the Christian life is not about striving to break into God’s grace, but about entering through Christ, who has already opened the way.
Finally, Jesus proclaims, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” This abundant life is not just about material prosperity or comfort—it is a deep, enduring fullness rooted in communion with God. It is a life marked by peace, purpose, and love, even amid difficulty.
