Community That Keeps
the Flame of Faith Alive

Christian community is the place where we keep the flame of hope alive among us and take it seriously so that it can grow and become stronger in us. In this way we can live with courage, trusting that there is a spiritual power in us when we are together that allows us to live in this world without surrendering to the powerful forces constantly seducing us toward despair. That is how we dare to say that God is a God of love even when we see hatred all around us. That is why we can claim that God is a God of life even when we see death and destruction and agony all around us. We say it together. We affirm it in each other. Waiting together, nurturing what has already begun, expecting its fulfillment – that is the meaning of marriage, friendship, community, and the Christian life.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, August 16, the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Matthew 15:21-28. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In Sunday’s gospel reading, a Canaanite woman comes to Jesus with one simple request: “Lord, help me.” Her daughter is suffering, and she refuses to give up, even when Jesus does not immediately respond as she hopes.

Her persistence teaches us something important about faith. Faith does not mean we always understand God’s timing or God’s ways. Faith means we continue to trust God even when the answer seems delayed.

Perhaps there is something in our own lives today for which we need to pray those same words: “Lord, help me.” Whatever we are carrying, we can bring it to Jesus with confidence, knowing that He hears us.

May we have the faith of this woman—to keep trusting, keep praying, and keep turning toward Jesus.

If you are in town, we look forward to seeing you on Sunday for service at 10:00 a.m. If you are out of town, please tune in to our Facebook page for Sunday service at 10:00 a.m.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
