A Reflection
for Your Weekend
from Henri Nouwen

You Belong to God

Your true identity is as a child of God. This is the identity you have to accept. Once you have claimed it and settled in it, you can live in a world that gives you much joy as well as pain. You can receive the praise as well as the blame that comes to you as an opportunity for strengthening your basic identity, because the identity that makes you free is anchored beyond all human praise and blame. You belong to God, and it is as a child of God that you are sent into the world.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, June 21, the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Matthew 10:26-33. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In this Gospel, Jesus speaks words that are both challenging and comforting: “Do not be afraid.” Three times in this short passage, Jesus tells His disciples not to fear. He knows that following Him will not always be easy. There will be opposition, misunderstandings, and moments when standing for the Gospel may cost us something.

Jesus reminds us God is always watching over His children with loving care.

Jesus points to the sparrows, tiny birds that seem insignificant in the eyes of the world. Yet not one of them falls to the ground without the Father's knowledge. Then He tells us, “You are worth more than many sparrows.” If God cares so deeply for even the smallest part of His creation, how much more does He care for each of us?

Fear often keeps us from fully living our faith. We may fear rejection, criticism, failure, or uncertainty about the future. Sometimes we remain silent when we should speak about Christ. At other times, we hesitate to make difficult moral choices because we worry about what others will think. Jesus invites us to trust that God's love is greater than any fear.

The Lord also calls us to acknowledge Him before others. This does not necessarily mean preaching on street corners. Rather, it means allowing our faith to be visible through our words, decisions, attitudes, and actions. When we live with integrity, show kindness, forgive others, defend the vulnerable, and remain faithful to Christ, we publicly witness to Him.
Practical Applications to Living out Matthew 10:26-33
  1. Identify a fear that is holding you back spiritually.
Ask yourself: What am I afraid of? Rejection? Failure? Loss of comfort? Bring that fear to prayer and entrust it to Christ.
  2. Speak about your faith when opportunities arise.
Share how God has worked in your life with a friend, family member, or coworker. A simple testimony can be a powerful witness.
  3. Practice trusting God's providence.
When worries arise, pray: “Jesus, I trust in You.” Remember that your Heavenly Father knows your needs before you ask.
  4. Let your Christian values guide your decisions at work, at home, and in your community. Often actions speak louder than words.
  5. Spend time reflecting on your worth in God's eyes. Jesus reminds us that we are deeply loved and known by God. Our value comes not from success, popularity, or accomplishments, but from being His beloved children.

Pray for peace. Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for service.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
