A Reflection for Your Weekend from Henri Nouwen

Discovering the Small Intimate Voice
Have you ever tried to spend a whole hour doing nothing but listening to the voice that dwells deep in your heart? Where there is no radio to listen to, no TV to watch, no book to read, no person to talk to, no project to finish, no phone call to make, how does that make you feel?
Often it does no more than make us so aware of how much there is still to do that we haven't yet done that we decide to leave that fearful silence and go back to work! It is not easy to enter into the silence and reach beyond the many boisterous and demanding voices of our world and to discover there the small intimate voice saying: “You are my Beloved Child, on you my favor rests.” Still, if we dare to embrace our solitude and befriend our silence, we will come to know that voice.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, October 11, the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Isaiah 25:6-10a. Here is a reflection on the passage.
Isaiah gives us a beautiful vision of what God desires for his people: a great feast on the mountain of the Lord. It is a feast of abundance, joy, and fellowship—a table where no one is forgotten and where God removes the things that have separated humanity from hope.
Perhaps most striking is the promise God will “destroy the veil that veils all peoples.” We all know what it is like to live behind a veil: fear, grief, disappointment, loneliness, sin, or uncertainty about the future. Sometimes these things make it difficult for us to see God clearly or to recognize his presence in our lives.
But Isaiah announces God is not content to leave us behind that veil. He comes to wipe away tears, to overcome death, and to bring his people into the fullness of life. The Christian sees this promise ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who invites us to the heavenly banquet and gives himself to us as the Bread of Life.
The passage also reminds us God's salvation is not meant for a select few. “The Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast.” God's table is expansive. As Christians gathered for worship, we are not simply individuals receiving God's grace; we are a community being drawn together around God's table.
Today, then, we can bring our fears, disappointments, and sorrows to the Lord. We can trust the promise that one day every tear will be wiped away. And even now, we can become signs of that coming feast by making room at our own tables—welcoming the lonely, forgiving those who have hurt us, feeding those who are hungry, and offering hope to those who are discouraged.
