Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, September 6, the 23rd in Ordinary Time is Romans 13:8-10. Here is a reflection on the passage.
Paul gives us a simple but challenging message in Romans 13:8–10: “Owe no one anything, except to love one another.” In a world where we can easily keep track of what people owe us; an apology, a favor, an explanation, or even respect; Paul reminds us there is one debt we never finish paying: the debt of love.
Christian love is more than being nice or having warm feelings toward others. Paul says love refuses to harm another person. Love chooses patience instead of irritation, forgiveness instead of revenge, kindness instead of cruelty, and understanding instead of quick judgment.
Notice Paul connects love with the commandments. He says the commandments such as “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet” are summed up in one command: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” When we genuinely love our neighbor, we naturally begin to seek what is good for that person.
This is especially important because Christian love is not limited to people who agree with us, appreciate us, or treat us well. Jesus calls us to love even when it is difficult. That doesn't mean approving of everything someone does or ignoring injustice. It means refusing to allow anger, resentment, or selfishness to have the final word.
Perhaps the most practical question for us this week is: “Who is God asking me to love?” It may be someone in our family, a coworker, a neighbor, or someone with whom we have a difficult relationship. We don't have to solve every problem or change every relationship overnight. We can simply take one step toward love.
So Paul gives us a beautiful challenge: Pay your debt of love today—and tomorrow, and the day after that. It is the one debt that, the more we give away, the more Christ fills us with.
