Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, June 7, the Feast of the Body & Blood of Christ is John 6:51-58. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In today's Gospel, Jesus makes one of the most astonishing declarations in all of Scripture: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever" (John 6:51). He goes on to say that His flesh is true food and His blood is true drink, and that whoever receives Him will remain in Him and He in them.

These words challenge us just as they challenged those who first heard them. Jesus is not offering merely a symbol or a metaphor. He is offering Himself. In the Eucharist, Christ gives us His Body and Blood so that we may share in His divine life. The Feast of Corpus Christi invites us to stand in awe before this mystery and to recognize the immense gift we receive whenever we come to the altar.

One spiritual implication of this passage is that Christianity is not simply about believing ideas about Jesus; it is about living in communion with Him. Jesus says, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in them" (John 6:56). God desires more than occasional contact with us. He desires a deep, personal union with us. Through communion, Christ nourishes our souls just as food nourishes our bodies.

This Gospel also reminds us we cannot sustain ourselves spiritually through our own strength. We often try to fill the hunger of our hearts with success, possessions, entertainment, or the approval of others. Yet these things never fully satisfy. Deep within every human person is a hunger for God. Jesus alone is the Bread of Life who can satisfy that hunger and give lasting peace.

Receiving the Eucharist should also transform the way we live. As we become united with Christ, we are called to become more like Him. The love we receive at the altar is meant to overflow into our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and even those who are difficult to love. The Eucharist strengthens us to forgive, to serve, and to place the needs of others before our own.

May Jesus bless you and your family. See you on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for Service.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
