A Reflection for Your Weekend from Henri Nouwen

Christ in Us Brings Healing
|
To be living reminders of God, we must be concerned first of all with our own intimacy with God. Once we have heard, seen, watched and touched the Word who is life, we cannot do other than be living reminders. Once we are connected with him, we will speak about him, sing his praise and proclaim his great deeds, not out of obligation but as a free, spontaneous response. In order for this response to be lasting… we need discipline, formation and training. But these can do little more than offer channels for the lived experience of God… Ultimately, it is Christ in us from whom healing comes. Only Christ can break through our human alienation and restore the broken connections with each other and with God.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, June 28, the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, is Matthew 10:37-42. Here is a reflection on the passage.
Jesus is not telling us to love our families less. Throughout Scripture, we are commanded to honor our parents, love our spouses, and care for our children. Rather, Jesus is teaching that our relationship with Him must be the foundation of every other relationship. When Christ is first in our lives, we are actually able to love others more deeply and more faithfully.
Every disciple faces moments when following Jesus requires sacrifice. Sometimes it means standing for truth when it is unpopular. Sometimes it means forgiving someone who has hurt us, serving when we would rather be comfortable, or making time for prayer when life is busy. Jesus calls this "taking up the cross." The cross is not simply suffering that happens to us; it is the daily choice to follow God's will even when it costs us something.
Jesus also says, "Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." The world tells us that fulfillment comes from putting ourselves first. Jesus teaches the opposite. Real life is discovered when we give ourselves away in love, service, and discipleship. The saints understood this truth. They found joy not by seeking their own comfort but by seeking God's will.
The passage concludes with a beautiful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness matter. Offering a cup of cold water to someone in need may seem insignificant, but Jesus sees it and values it. In God's kingdom, no act of love is too small.
