A Reflection for Your Weekend from Henri Nouwen
|
Beauty in Difference
|
We all reflect God's love in different ways. Together we are like a mosaic. In a mosaic one stone is bright, another stone is gold, another stone is small. If we look at it closely, we can admire the beauty of each stone, but if we step back from it, we can see that all the little stones reveal a beautiful picture and tell a story that none of the stones can tell by itself. Together the different stones reflect the face of God to the world.

Arrive to Sunday Service prepared to hear God’s Word proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, June 14, the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Matthew 9:36-10:8. Here is a reflection on the passage.
In this Gospel passage, Jesus looks upon the crowds with compassion because they are "troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd." His heart is moved by their suffering, confusion, and need. He then tells His disciples that "the harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few," and sends them out to bring God's healing, hope, and presence to others.
This passage reveals an important truth about the Christian life: faith begins with encountering the compassion of Christ, but it does not end there. Jesus calls His followers to become instruments of that same compassion in the world. The disciples were not sent because they were perfect or had all the answers; they were sent because they had first experienced the love and mercy of Jesus.
Today, many people around us are spiritually, emotionally, or physically burdened. Some struggle with loneliness, anxiety, grief, or a lack of purpose. Jesus continues to look upon them with compassion, and He continues to send His disciples into the harvest. We may not be called to travel to distant lands, but we are called to bring Christ's presence into our families, workplaces, schools, churches, and communities.
Living out this Gospel means asking ourselves: Who needs compassion from me today? How can I share Christ's love through a kind word, a listening ear, an act of service, or a prayer? It also means praying for more laborers—people willing to dedicate their lives to serving God as priests, religious, missionaries, and faithful lay disciples.
The mission Jesus gave His first disciples remains our mission today: to freely share the gifts we have received from God. As Jesus says, "Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give." The more we allow Christ's compassion to fill our hearts, the more naturally we will become witnesses of His love to the world.
