Dear Friend,

After all that has been going on at PWC these past few weeks, we now stop and reflect on the gift of the Holy Spirit in our life and in the life of our community. This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, the feast of the Holy Spirit. Please wear red. Please pray for those who will be ordained deacons in service to our community on Sunday. May they reflect the love of Jesus to all they encounter.

A Spiritual Reflection
for Your Weekend

God's Preparations in the Interruptions

A few years ago, I met an old professor at the University of Notre Dame. Looking back on his long life of teaching, he said with a funny twinkle in his eyes: “I have always been complaining that my work was constantly interrupted until I slowly discovered that my interruptions were my work.”

That is the great conversion in our life: to recognize and believe that the many unexpected events are not just disturbing interruptions of our projects, but the way in which God molds our hearts and prepares us for his return. Our great temptations are boredom and bitterness. When our good plans are interrupted by poor weather, our peace of mind by inner turmoil, our hope for peace by a new war, our desire for a stable government by a constant changing of the guards, and our desire for immortality by real death, we are tempted to give in to a paralyzing boredom or to strike back in destructive bitterness. But when we believe that patience can make our expectations grow, then fate can be converted into a vocation, wounds into a call for deeper understanding, and sadness into a birthplace of joy.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, May 24, Pentecost Sunday is: John 20:19-23. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In the Gospel for Pentecost, the disciples are gathered behind locked doors. They are afraid, uncertain, and unsure of what comes next. Jesus had risen, but they had not yet fully grasped what their mission would be. Into that fear, Jesus suddenly stands among them and says, “Peace be with you.” Then He breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

There is something deeply human about this scene. The disciples had seen extraordinary things, yet they still hid behind locked doors. Many people today know that same experience. The doors may not be made of wood and iron, but they are still real. Some people live behind doors of anxiety, fear of failure, loneliness, disappointment, grief, guilt, or uncertainty about the future. Others hide behind busyness, distractions, or emotional walls that keep others at a distance.

The Gospel reminds us that Jesus does not wait for the doors to open before He comes to us. He enters despite them.

Notice that Jesus does not begin with correction. He does not say, “Why are you hiding?” or “You should have more faith.” Instead, His first words are: “Peace be with you.” The peace Jesus gives is not merely the absence of problems. The disciples still faced persecution and challenges ahead. Rather, His peace is the assurance of His presence: I am with you; you do not face life alone.

Many people search for peace in success, possessions, entertainment, or control. Yet those things can disappear quickly. The peace of Christ is different because it does not depend on circumstances. It comes from knowing that even in uncertainty, God remains present.

Then Jesus breathes on them and gives them the Holy Spirit. This act recalls the creation story when God breathed life into Adam. Jesus is creating something new. The frightened disciples are being transformed into courageous witnesses.

Pentecost is not simply a celebration of something that happened long ago. It is a reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to work in believers today. The Spirit strengthens us when we feel weak, guides us when we are confused, comforts us in suffering, and gives us courage to live our faith in everyday life. The challenge is many Christians live as if Pentecost never happened. We believe in Christ, but we often remain behind our locked doors. We may hesitate to speak about our faith, forgive someone who hurt us, reach out to someone in need, or trust God with parts of our lives we want to control.

Pentecost asks a personal question: What doors remain locked in my life?
Perhaps Jesus is saying:
  • Open the door of fear and trust Me.
  • Open the door of resentment and forgive.
  • Open the door of comfort and serve others.
  • Open the door of indifference and love more deeply.
  • Open the door of doubt and seek Me.
The disciples who once hid in fear would soon become people who preached with courage and changed the world. The difference was not their own strength; it was the power of the Holy Spirit within them.
The same Spirit has been given to us.

Please pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our community. See you on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for Service.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
