A Reflection
for Your Weekend
from Henri Nouwen

You Are Accepted

The first love says, “I loved you before you could love anyone or before you could receive love from anyone. I have accepted you. You are accepted. You are loved no matter what mother, father, brother, sister, school, church, society does. You are born out of my love. I have breathed you out of my love. I have spoken you out of my love. You are the incarnation of my love and in me there is no hatred, there is no revenge, there is no resentment. There is nothing that wants to reject you. I love you. Can you trust that love? The original love is the original blessing. The original love is the original acceptance.

The reading for this Sunday, August 2, the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Isaiah 55:1-3. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In today's reading, the prophet Isaiah extends a beautiful invitation from God: "Come, all you who are thirsty." God speaks to every person who longs for something more—those who are searching for peace, purpose, hope, forgiveness, or love. He reminds us that the deepest hunger and thirst of the human heart cannot be satisfied by success, possessions, or worldly achievements. Only God can truly fill the emptiness within us.

Isaiah also asks a challenging question: "Why spend your money for what is not bread, your wages for what fails to satisfy?" It is easy to invest our time and energy in things that promise happiness but ultimately leave us wanting more. We can become consumed by work, entertainment, social media, or the pursuit of approval, while neglecting the One who alone gives lasting life. God gently calls us to examine where we are placing our hearts.

The good news is that God's invitation is free. We do not earn His grace or purchase His love. He simply asks us to come, listen, and receive. Every time we gather for worship, pray, read Scripture, or celebrate the Eucharist, God is offering us the nourishment our souls truly need.

This week, take a few moments each day to ask yourself, "What am I feeding my soul?" Set aside time to pray, read a few verses of Scripture, or simply sit quietly in God's presence. As we respond to God's invitation, we will discover that He alone satisfies the deepest desires of our hearts and leads us into the abundant life He has promised.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday for Service at 10:00 a.m. Have a blessed weekend!
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
