Welcome to October! Check out all the great stuff going on at PWC. Just a reminder — by our baptism all of us are called to evangelize. So as the weather starts to cool off (hopefully) this might be a wonderful time to invite a friend or neighbor to the Praise and Worship Center — especially someone who is struggling with God, asking faith questions, or seeking to find meaning and purpose in their lives.

A Reflection for Your Weekend from Henri Nouwen
|
People of Reconciliation
|
If you dare to believe you are beloved before you were born, you may suddenly realize that your life is very, very special. You become conscious you were sent here just for a short time, for twenty, forty, or eighty years, to discover and believe you are a beloved child of God. The length of time doesn't matter. You are sent into this world to believe in yourself as God's chosen one and then to help your brothers and sisters know they are also beloved sons and daughters of God who belong together. You're sent into this world to be a people of reconciliation. You are sent to heal, to break down the walls between you and your neighbors, locally, nationally, and globally. Before all the distinctions, the separations, and the walls built on the foundations of fear, there was unity in the mind and heart of God. Out of that unity, you are sent into this world for a little while to claim that you and every other human being belong to that same God of Love who lives from eternity to eternity.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, October 4, the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Philippians 4:6-9. Here is a reflection on the passage.
Paul’s words in Philippians 4:6–9 speak directly to one of the great struggles of our lives: anxious hearts. “Do not be anxious about anything,” Paul says. That can sound almost impossible. We have concerns about our families, our health, our work, our relationships, our future, and the world around us. How can Paul tell us not to be anxious?
Paul is not suggesting that Christians never experience worry. Rather, he invites us to bring our worries into the presence of God. “In everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
Notice the words in everything. Nothing is too small to bring to God, and nothing is too large. We don't have to carry our burdens alone. Prayer is not simply telling God what we want; it is also placing ourselves, our fears, and our uncertainties into God's hands. And then Paul gives us a remarkable promise: “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
God's peace does not necessarily mean that our problems disappear. Sometimes the difficult situation remains. The diagnosis may still be uncertain. The relationship may still need healing. The future may still be unclear. Yet something within us can change when we entrust these things to God. We discover that we are not alone.
Paul then tells us where to direct our minds: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable… think about these things.”
That is especially important because what occupies our minds often shapes our hearts. If we constantly fill our minds with fear, anger, resentment, or discouragement, those things can begin to define us. Paul invites us instead to intentionally dwell upon what is good, true, beautiful, and worthy of praise. Finally, Paul says, “Keep on doing what you have learned.”
Christian peace is not merely something we feel; it becomes something we practice. We pray. We forgive. We serve. We speak words of encouragement. We choose gratitude. We trust God one day at a time.
Each of us carries some anxiety no one else can see. Philippians reminds us we can place those burdens before God. We do not have to understand everything. We do not have to control everything. We are invited simply to trust the One who holds everything.
