God’s Word Proclaimed

The scripture reading for this Sunday, March 17 The Fifth Sunday of Lent is John 12:20-33 Here is a synopsis of the reading:

In John 12:20-33, we find a passage rich with meaning and significance, providing us with profound insights into the nature of discipleship and the path of self-sacrificial love.

The passage begins with some Greeks coming to Philip, expressing their desire to see Jesus. This moment serves as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ universal mission, extending beyond the boundaries of ethnicity and culture. It reminds us that the message of Christ is meant for all people, transcending barriers, and welcoming everyone into the fold of God’s love.

Jesus responds to the Greeks’ request with words that may seem cryptic at first: "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." Here, Jesus speaks of his impending death and resurrection, the ultimate manifestation of God’s glory. Lent is a time for us to contemplate the profound mystery of the cross and to deepen our understanding of the sacrificial love Jesus demonstrated for us.

In the passage, Jesus uses the imagery of a grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying in order to bear much fruit. This image encapsulates the essence of Christian discipleship – a willingness to die to self in order to bring forth new life. Lent calls us to examine our own lives and discern where we are being called to let go of our selfish desires and embrace the way of the cross.

Furthermore, Jesus speaks of the necessity of hating one’s life in this world in order to keep it for eternal life. This is not a call to despise the gift of life itself, but rather an invitation to prioritize the values of the kingdom of God over the fleeting pleasures of this world. Lent invites us to reorient our hearts and minds toward the things that truly matter – love, justice, mercy, and compassion.

Finally, Jesus speaks of being lifted up on the cross, drawing all people to himself. The cross stands as a symbol of God’s unfathomable love for humanity, a love so great that it willingly embraces suffering and death for the sake of redemption. As we journey through Lent, may we gaze upon the cross with humility and gratitude, recognizing the immense cost of our salvation and renewing our commitment to follow Jesus faithfully.

We look forward to seeing you for Sunday Service at 10:00 am.
