God’s Word Proclaimed

The scripture reading for this Sunday, March 10 The Third Sunday of Lent is John 3:14-21 Here is a synopsis of the reading:

As we journey through the solemn and introspective Season of Lent, the words of John 3:14-21 offer profound guidance and insight for Christians seeking spiritual growth and renewal. In this passage, Jesus speaks to Nicodemus, conveying essential truths about salvation, grace, and the transformative power of faith.

The passage begins with a reference to the Old Testament story of Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, a symbol of healing and salvation for the Israelites. Jesus uses this imagery to foreshadow His own sacrificial death on the cross, emphasizing that just as the serpent was lifted up, so must the Son of Man be lifted up for the salvation of humanity. This underscores the central message of Lent – the journey towards the cross, where Jesus willingly offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for the redemption of sinners.

As we reflect on these verses, we are invited to contemplate the depth of God's love and the immense sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf. It is a time to humbly acknowledge our own sinfulness and inadequacy, recognizing that it is only through the cross that we find forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Lent invites us to embrace a spirit of repentance and renewal, turning away from our sinful ways and turning towards the light of Christ.

Furthermore, Jesus reminds us that belief in Him is not merely intellectual assent, but a transformative encounter that brings about a new way of living. He declares that those who believe in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Lent serves as an opportunity for us to deepen our faith, to recommit ourselves to living lives marked by obedience to Christ and love for others.

Finally, Jesus speaks of the contrast between light and darkness, highlighting the moral and spiritual choices we face in our daily lives. As followers of Christ, we are called to walk in the light, living lives characterized by righteousness, truth, and love. Lent beckons us to examine our hearts and actions, to renounce the works of darkness, and to embrace the way of Christ wholeheartedly.

John 3:14-21 invites us to journey deeper into the heart of God during the season of Lent, pondering the significance of the cross, embracing the gift of salvation by faith, and committing ourselves to walk in the light of Christ. May this season be a time of profound spiritual growth, renewal, and transformation for all who seek to follow Jesus more closely.

We look forward to seeing you for Sunday Service at 10:00 am. If you have been away, the Season of Lent is a wonderful time to reconnect with PWC. It is important that as a Christian you connect with a Christian community.

Love,
Fr. Dale and Pastor Mark
