God’s Word Proclaimed

The scripture reading for this Sunday, March 3 The Third Sunday of Lent is Exodus 20:1-3, 12-17 Here is a synopsis of the reading:

Lent invites us to a period of self-examination, a time where we turn inward to face our shortcomings. Exodus 20:1-3, 12-17 offers us the timeless wisdom of the Ten Commandments as a mirror to reflect on our relationship with God and others.

Commandments 1-3: A Call to Unwavering Faith The first three commandments remind us to prioritize God above all else:

"You shall have no other gods before me." It's crucial to ask ourselves: Do any earthly possessions, desires, or idols threaten to overshadow our devotion to God?

"You shall not make for yourself an image…" Are we fixated on creating our own image of God rather than embracing the divine mystery that transcends human understanding?

"You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God…" Are we mindful of the sacredness of God's name, or is it used flippantly in moments of frustration or casual conversation?

• Commandments 4-10: A Guide to Loving Our Neighbor The remaining commandments are vital to our relationships with others:

"Honor your father and your mother…" Have we shown gratitude and respect to the people who brought us into the world and nurtured us?

"You shall not murder…" Have we truly harbored respect for all human life, even in moments of anger or disagreement?

"You shall not commit adultery…" Do we honor the sanctity of relationships, including our own, with unwavering commitment and faithfulness?

"You shall not steal…" Are we honest and just in our dealings with others, respecting their possessions and rights?

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor…" Do we build up our communities with truth-telling, or do we damage reputations with gossip and lies?

"You shall not covet…" Are we content with what we have, or do we constantly compare ourselves and our possessions to others with envy?

Lent as a Time to Realign: We may feel a sense of dismay when considering how we fall short of the wisdom ingrained within the Ten Commandments. But Lent is not merely about recognizing our faults; it's a season of reorienting our lives towards God's will. Let the Ten Commandments be a guiding light during this introspective time, illuminating the areas where we can strive for deeper love, respect, and integrity towards God and neighbor.

We look forward to seeing you for Sunday Service at 10:00 am. If you have been away, the Season of Lent is a wonderful time to reconnect with PWC.

Love,
Fr. Dale and Pastor Mark
