for Your Weekend

Moving from Our Head
to Our Heart

How do we concretely move from head to heart? When I lie in my bed, not able to fall asleep because of my many words and worries; when I am preoccupied with all the things that I must do or that can go wrong; when I can't take my mind off my concern for a needy or dying friend – what am I supposed to do? Pray? Fine, but how do I do this?

One simple way is by slowly repeating a particular prayer with as much attentiveness as possible. Focused prayer, first in the mind and then repeated in the heart, becomes easier the more you practice. When you know the “Our Father,” the “Glory Be to God,” or the “Lord, Have Mercy” by heart, you have something to start with. Just by praying those prayers repeatedly. You might like to learn by heart the Twenty-third Psalm (“The Lord is my shepherd…”) or Paul's words about love to the Corinthians, or the Prayer of St. Francis (“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…”).

As you lie in bed, drive your car, wait for the bus, or walk your dog, you can slowly let the words of one of these prayers go through your mind down to your heart by trying to listen with your whole being to what you are repeating. You may be distracted by your worries, but if you keep going back to the words of the prayer, you will gradually discover that your worries become less obsessive, your attention becomes more focused, and you really start to enjoy praying. As prayer descends from your mind into the center of your being, you will discover its healing power.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, October 18, the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Matthew 22:15-21. Here is a reflection on the passage.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is confronted with a trick question: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? His opponents hope to trap him, but Jesus responds with wisdom: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

Jesus reminds us we have responsibilities in the world. We are called to be good citizens, to respect others, and to contribute to the well-being of our communities. But Jesus also challenges us to recognize our deepest allegiance belongs to God.

The question for us is not simply what we owe the government, our families, or our neighbors. The deeper question is: What do we owe God?

We owe God more than an hour of worship on Sunday. We owe God our hearts, our gratitude, our love, and our willingness to serve others. We are created in God's image, and our lives are meant to reflect that image through compassion, forgiveness, generosity, and justice.

It is easy to give God a small portion of our time while allowing work, responsibilities, worries, and personal ambitions to occupy most of our attention. Yet God does not ask merely for what is left over. God invites us to place our whole lives in his hands.

As we gather for worship this Sunday, let us consider this question: If our lives bear the image of God, can others recognize that image in the way we treat them?

As Christians, we should be determined not only to give God our prayers, but also to give God our daily choices, our relationships, and our service to those in need. For when we give ourselves to God, we begin to live as the people God created us to be.

Please pray for peace in our world.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday for Service at 10:00 a.m.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
