Isaiah 25:6-10a, December 1, 2021

Reading: On this mountain the LORD of hosts
will provide for all peoples
A feast of rich food and choice wines,
juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.
On this mountain he will destroy
the veil that veils all peoples,
The web that is woven over all nations;
he will destroy death forever.
The Lord GOD will wipe away
the tears from all faces;
The reproach of his people he will remove
from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken.

On that day it will be said:
“Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!
This is the LORD for whom we looked;
let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!”
For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

Reflection:  Isaiah describes a great day of the Lord in the image of an amazing banquet.  It is a rich feast of food and choice wine; one that is bountiful and extravagant.   It is a meal in which God will wipe away tears from all faces and destroy death forever.  Making clear the heavenly banquet is meant for all, this is one of the most uplifting “day of the Lord” scripture passages.   God makes clear the heavenly banquet is meant for all.  The pledge is particularly attractive to the underprivileged and deprived who would never in their lives have experienced a feast.  There are many metaphors, images and descriptions of God throughout scripture.  This specific text is unambiguous: our God is a god of life and plenty who warmly and individually reaches out to wipe the tears from those who suffer.  Whatever our state of life currently is, this passage from Isaiah provides great comfort and reassurance.
