The Vocation of Peacemaking
|
What we are called to is a life of peacemaking in which all that we do, say, think, or dream is part of our concern to bring peace to this world. Just as Jesus' command to love one another cannot be seen as a part-time obligation, but requires our total dedication, so too Jesus' call to peacemaking is unconditional, unlimited, and uncompromising. None of us is excused! It is not limited to specialists who are competent in military matters, or to radicals who have dedicated themselves to leafletting, demonstrating, and civil disobedience. No specialist or radical can diminish the undeniable vocation of each Christian to be a peacemaker. Peacemaking is a full-time vocation and it includes each member of God's people.

Arrive to Sunday Service prepared to hear God’s word proclaimed.
The reading for this Sunday, November 30, the First Sunday of Advent is Matthew 24:37-44. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.
The First Sunday of Advent begins with Jesus’ sober words about His Second Coming. It can feel surprising—almost jarring—that the Church invites us to start a season of hope by listening to Christ speak about vigilance, judgment, and the unexpected hour. Yet this is precisely the point: Advent is not merely a sentimental countdown to Christmas. It is a wake-up call for the soul.
In Matthew 24, Jesus evokes the days of Noah. People were living ordinary lives—eating, drinking, marrying—unaware that they were drifting spiritually, unaware that grace was passing by unnoticed. The point is not that daily life is sinful. Rather, the danger is when daily life becomes all-consuming, when our hearts fall asleep, and we stop paying attention to God’s presence and God’s promise.
Jesus then gives a simple but piercing command: “Therefore, stay awake!” Not in anxiety. Not in fear. But in hope and readiness.
Here are small, concrete ways to “stay awake” this week:
|
- Begin each day with a simple prayer: “Lord Jesus, awaken my heart today. Help me see Your presence and prepare for Your coming.”
- Choose one habit to transform. Perhaps reducing noise, spending less time scrolling, or carving out five minutes of silence daily. Small choices wake up the soul.
- Rekindle hope. Ask: Where have I stopped believing God can move in my life? Surrender that area to Him each day of this first week.
- Practice readiness through generosity. Offer a deliberate act of kindness to someone who doesn’t expect it. Surprise others the way Christ surprises us.
