A Spiritual Reflection for
Your Weekend

Love Is Stronger Than Death

The seeds of death are at work in us, but love is stronger than death. Your death and mine is our final passage, our exodus to the full realization of our identity as God's beloved children and to full communion with the God of love. Jesus walked the path ahead of us and invites us to choose the same path during our lifetime. He calls to us, “Follow Me.” He assures us. “Do not be afraid.” This is our faith.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, November 23, the Feast of Christ the King is: Luke 23:35-43. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

On Christ the King Sunday, we receive an unexpected image of kingship. Instead of a throne of gold, we see a cross of wood. Instead of royal garments, we see a body stripped and wounded. Instead of crowds praising their King, we hear mockery: “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”

Christ reigns not by domination, but by self-giving love.

A King Who Stays on the Cross
In today’s Gospel, the leaders taunt Jesus:
“Save yourself!”
But a King who steps down to save Himself would no longer be the Savior of others. Jesus stays on the cross because His kingship is revealed not in avoiding suffering but in entering into it with us. He refuses to use power for self-preservation; instead, He uses love for our redemption. The Cross is His throne. Mercy is His scepter. Forgiveness is His royal decree.

The Good Thief: The First to Recognize the King
Amid the insults, one voice speaks truth.
The criminal beside Jesus—tradition calls him Dismas—sees what no one else sees: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” This is astonishing faith. He sees a crucified man and calls Him “King.” Jesus responds with royal authority: “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” He asks for mercy and receives more than he imagined. He seeks remembrance and receives eternal life.

What Does It Mean to Serve Christ the King?
Christ’s kingship overturns the world’s expectations. His power is compassion.
His triumph is sacrifice. His victory is love poured out. To honor this King is to let His way become our way.
  • If He forgives His enemies, then we are called to forgive those who wound us.
  • If He welcomes the repentant, then we must welcome those seeking a new beginning.
  • If He stays close to suffering, then we must be present to the hurting, the lonely, the forgotten.
  • If He uses power to serve, then we must use whatever authority we hold—with our families, at work, in the parish—with humility and kindness.
Christ reigns wherever mercy is shown, wherever compassion softens a hardened heart, wherever love is chosen over vengeance.

A King Who Remembers Us
Like the Good Thief, each of us can say: “Jesus, remember me…”
And Christ the King—crucified yet risen—answers with the same tender promise:
“You are not forgotten. You are chosen. You are loved. My kingdom is for you.”

On this final Sunday of the liturgical year, we are invited us to surrender again to the One who rules not by fear but by love. Jesus’ throne is the Cross, but His kingdom is eternal. Jesus invites us to live under His reign of mercy.

Pray for peace. Pray for those who are food insecure. Pray for those who struggle in their faith.

We will see you on Sunday morning for Service at 10:00!
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
