A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend by Henri Nouwen
|
Leaping Toward Life
|
Joy is that ongoing movement out of the places of death, out of the places where things remain the same and are not moving. Everything in life changes. Where we see life, we see change. And as soon as things stop changing, death appears. We become rigid, stiff, dead. It is very important for us to realize that joy is precisely that leaping toward life and moving away from the places that are the same. Joy is always about an experience of life as new.

Arrive to Sunday Service prepared to hear God’s word proclaimed.
The reading for this Sunday, November 16, the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time is: Luke 21:5-19. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.
In this passage, Jesus stands in the Temple of Jerusalem as people admire its beauty—the impressive stones, the lavish offerings, the splendor of a place that represented the very heart of Israel’s faith.
Yet Jesus shocks them with a prophecy: “The days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” The disciples, startled and afraid, ask when this will happen and what signs will precede it. Jesus does not give them a timetable. Instead, He gives them a warning—and a promise. He warns chaos, betrayal, persecution, and false prophets will come. The world will tremble. But He promises, “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”
|
- The Fragility of What Seems Permanent
The disciples’ awe at the Temple mirrors our own attachment to the things we think will last—our institutions, our possessions, our routines, even our sense of control. Jesus reminds us that nothing in this world is truly permanent. What seems solid and immovable can crumble in an instant.
This is not meant to make us fearful, but free. When we realize that even the grandest stones can fall, we can turn our hearts toward what endures: the Kingdom of God, which cannot be destroyed.
- Faith in the Midst of Turmoil
Jesus’ words about wars, earthquakes, and persecution resonate in every age. He tells us that suffering and instability do not mean that God has abandoned us. In fact, He says the opposite: “This will give you an opportunity to testify.”
Moments of trial can become moments of witness. When Christians respond to chaos with peace, to hatred with forgiveness, to fear with trust, we proclaim a different kind of kingdom—the one built not on stone but on love.
- “By Your Perseverance You Will Secure Your Lives”
Jesus does not promise an easy road, but He promises His presence. “I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking,” He says. In times of uncertainty or opposition, it is Christ Himself who strengthens us from within.
The Greek word for perseverance — hypomonē — means patient endurance, steadfast faith under pressure. It is not a passive waiting, but an active trust: holding fast to Christ when everything else is shaking. In this endurance, we are shaped into disciples who resemble Him—the One who endured the Cross, trusting the Father completely.
- A Practical Response
• Keep your eyes on Christ, not on the chaos of the world. Spend time daily in prayer, Scripture, and quiet, letting His peace take root in your heart. • Live as a witness, even in small ways: patience with a difficult person, courage in defending truth, hope when others despair. • Trust that nothing is wasted. Every trial borne in faith becomes part of God’s redemptive work in us and through us.
