A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend by Henri Nouwen
|
The Rhythm of Daily Prayer
One of the interesting things that happen when we spend time with God in prayer is that we find out how tired and anxious we are. If we don't fall asleep, we find out how full our head is of worries and concerns and things we need to do. While we are trying to be with God, we are busy thinking about all the plans we have made. A thousand distractions will come our way, like jumping monkeys filling a banana tree. As soon as we enter into solitude, we discover how chaotic our inner life is.
Suddenly all sorts of thoughts, feelings, and fantasies come to the surface, and we soon find ourselves thinking about old pains and old rewards, about appointments we forgot to keep and letters we forgot to write, about people we hope to see and people we hope we never see, about a future vacation, a possible promotion, or our approaching retirement. Instead of being prayerful we become restless and can't wait until our half hour is over.
Don't be surprised at this. You can't just suddenly shut the door of a house that was always open to strangers and expect no one to knock on the door. It will take a while for these countless distractions to disappear, but eventually they will, especially when they realize that you refuse to open the door to them for at least half an hour. If we faithfully keep our time of prayer, every single day, then slowly the distractions diminish and our mind and body join in a rhythm of daily prayer.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, November 2, the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time is Wisdom 3:1-9. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.
This passage from the Book of Wisdom offers one of the most consoling visions of God’s care and eternal promise. It speaks to every heart that has ever grieved, suffered, or questioned the meaning of pain and death. The author reminds us of what appears tragic or meaningless through human eyes is, in the light of faith, the path to eternal peace.
|
- God Holds Us Securely
“The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God.” What a beautiful image — to be in God’s hand. It conveys safety, tenderness, and intimacy. Nothing can snatch us away from that divine grasp. Jesus echoes this truth centuries later: “No one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). Our ultimate security is not in our possessions, achievements, or even in earthly life itself — it is in belonging to God.
- The World’s Misunderstanding of Suffering
The “foolish,” the passage says, view death or suffering as an “affliction.” To the eyes of the world, faith in the midst of loss may seem naïve or irrational. Yet Wisdom reveals that God is working even in apparent defeat. The righteous may be tested by suffering — like gold in a furnace — but that testing refines them, purifies their love, and leads them to glory.
Our Christian faith builds on this same mystery: the Cross. The suffering and death of Christ looked like failure, yet it became the source of eternal life. Likewise, our trials can become a place of transformation when joined to the suffering of Jesus.
- Hope Beyond Death
“But they are in peace.” These four words are at the heart of Christian hope. Death is not the end — it is a passage into the fullness of God’s presence. The faithful departed are not lost to us; they are more alive than ever, resting in the love that created them. This is why Christians can grieve with hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13): we believe that the same Lord who conquered death will bring all who trust in Him to everlasting joy.
- Sharing in God’s Promise
The passage concludes, “Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love.” To abide in God’s love is not only our destiny but our calling now. Each time we trust God in difficulty, forgive instead of retaliating, or cling to hope in darkness, we participate in that eternal life already beginning in us.
