A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend
by Henri Nouwen

Useless Time

The world says, “If you are not making good use of your time, you are useless.” Jesus says, “Come spend some useless time with me.” If we think about prayer in terms of its usefulness to us – what prayer will do for us, what spiritual benefits we will gain, what insights we will gain, what divine presence we may feel – God cannot easily speak to us. But if we can detach ourselves from the idea of the usefulness of prayer and the results of prayer, we become free to “waste” a precious hour with God in prayer. Gradually, we may find, our “useless” time will transform us, and everything around us will be different.

The reading for this Sunday, October 12, the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time is Second Corinthians 2:5-11.

Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

In today’s passage, the Apostle Paul speaks not only to a church in crisis but to the human heart in need of healing. He writes about a person who had caused grief—likely someone who had sinned publicly—and how the church had responded with discipline.

But now Paul urges them to forgive, comfort, and reaffirm their love for this individual, warning that excessive sorrow can overwhelm a person and that Satan can use unresolved conflict to gain a foothold among believers.

This passage reminds us that church discipline or accountability should never end in rejection, but in restoration. Paul doesn’t downplay the seriousness of sin, but he highlights the greater priority: reconciliation. He sees forgiveness not only as a moral command but as spiritual protection. “We are not unaware of Satan’s schemes,” Paul says—division, resentment, and bitterness are some of his most effective tools. Forgiveness is not easy. It’s deeply personal. But in the body of Christ, we are called to move beyond punishment toward healing. We are to mirror the grace we have received from God.

Here are some ways we can apply this in daily life:
  1. Release Resentment
If you’ve been hurt, consider where you may be holding on to resentment. Ask God to help you begin the process of forgiving—not because the person deserves it, but because you’ve been forgiven.
  2. Reach Out in Love
If someone has repented but still feels isolated or shamed, take the initiative to reach out. A simple word of encouragement or affirmation can be the very thing that helps them heal.
  3. Guard Against Bitterness
Paul’s warning about Satan’s schemes applies to all of us. Unforgiveness festers. It turns into bitterness. Be vigilant in your heart. Seek reconciliation where possible, and keep short accounts with others.
  4. Restore Gently
When someone is returning from a failure, welcome them with grace. Don’t make them “pay penance” through guilt. Restoration in the church should reflect the mercy of Christ.

Please pray for peace in our world, in our community, and in our hearts.

We will see you on Sunday for service at 10:00 a.m. If you are out of town, please join us on Facebook Live.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
