A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend
by Henri Nouwen

People of Reconciliation

If you dare to believe that you are beloved before you were born, you may suddenly realize that your life is very, very special. You become conscious that you were sent here just for a short time, for twenty, forty, or eighty years, to discover and believe that you are a beloved child of God. The length of time doesn't matter. You are sent into this world to believe in yourself as God's chosen one and then to help your brothers and sisters know that they are also beloved sons and daughters of God who belong together. You're sent into this world to be a people of reconciliation. You are sent to heal, to break down the walls between you and your neighbors, locally, nationally, and globally. Before all the distinctions, the separations, and the walls built on the foundations of fear, there was unity in the mind and heart of God. Out of that unity, you are sent into this world for a little while to claim that you and every other human being belong to that same God of Love who lives from eternity to eternity.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed

The reading for this Sunday, October 5, the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time is 1 Corinthians 12:12-26.

Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

Paul’s words remind us of a profound truth about life in Christ: we belong to one another. Through baptism, we have been joined into the Body of Christ, where diversity is not a threat but a gift. Just as a body needs eyes, ears, hands, and feet, the Church needs the variety of gifts and vocations given to her members.

Too often, we fall into comparison or competition—wishing we had someone else’s role, or undervaluing our own. Paul pushes back against this by insisting no part of the body is unnecessary. Each has dignity, each has purpose, each is indispensable. In God’s design, the seemingly small acts of service—the quiet prayer, the unnoticed kindness, the hidden sacrifice—are just as vital as preaching, teaching, or leadership.

This passage also challenges us to resist the temptation of isolation. The eye cannot function apart from the body; neither can a Christian flourish apart from the community of faith. We are not made to live the Christian life alone, but to encourage, support, and depend on one another.

Practically Applying This Passage to Your Life
  • Affirm the gifts of others. Instead of comparing, thank God for the diversity of gifts in your community. Tell someone how their presence or service makes a difference.
  • Embrace your own role. No matter how small it seems, offer your talents and efforts to Christ. Ask Him to use your gifts for His Kingdom.
  • Strengthen unity. Look for ways to build bridges within your church or small group. When disagreements arise, remember you are all part of the same body.
  • Serve where needed. Sometimes God calls us to fill a gap, even if it is not our preferred role. Like the hand helping when the foot is weak, we are called to carry one another.
  • Pray for the whole Body of Christ. Lift up not only your local congregation, but also Christians worldwide, recognizing we are united across cultures and traditions in Christ.
When we live this way, the world sees not a fractured group of individuals, but a living Body that reveals Christ’s presence on earth.

Seek to be the Body of Christ to all you encounter this weekend!

We will see you on Sunday for service at 10:00 a.m. If you are out of town, please join us on Facebook Live.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
