A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend by Henri Nouwen
|
Hope Built on Promise
Optimism arranges reality in a way that enables us to say things will get better. Pessimism arranges the same reality so that we can say things will probably get worse. When it rains, the optimist says, “How wonderful! Things will grow.” Seeing the same rain, the pessimist says, “Everything will drown.”
Being neither an optimist nor a pessimist, Jesus speaks about hope that is not based on chances that things will get better or worse. His hope is built upon the promise that, whatever happens, God will stay with us at all times, in all places. God is the God of life.

Arrive to Sunday Service Prepared to Hear God’s Word Proclaimed
The reading for this Sunday, September 28, the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time is: Luke 16:19-31.
Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.
In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus paints a vivid picture of two lives: one clothed in luxury, the other covered in sores; one feasting daily, the other starving at the rich man’s gate. After death, their situations are reversed. The rich man, who ignored Lazarus in life, suffers in torment, while Lazarus finds comfort in the presence of Abraham.
This story is not just about wealth and poverty—it is about blindness of heart. The sin of the rich man was not his wealth but his indifference. Day after day he stepped over Lazarus, seeing him but never really seeing him. He failed to recognize in Lazarus the presence of a brother, a child of God, someone who bore the image of the Creator.
Jesus challenges us to consider: who are the “Lazaruses” at our gates today? They may be the poor, the lonely, the immigrant, the elderly, or even a family member whose needs we ignore. This parable warns us that eternal consequences flow from how we respond—or fail to respond—to the needs around us.
At the heart of this passage is a call to conversion. We already have “Moses and the prophets” and the Gospel of Christ. We do not need further proof. What we need is the courage to live what we profess: to love God and neighbor with a generous, compassionate heart.
|
Practical Applications of this Passage
|
- Examine your “gate.” Who in your daily life is in need of attention, compassion, or support that you may be overlooking? This might be someone materially poor or someone emotionally isolated.
- Practice daily generosity. Share your resources—time, money, or talents—with those in need. Even small acts of kindness, like checking in on a neighbor or donating to a food pantry, matter greatly.
- Open your eyes to hidden suffering. Ask God in prayer for the grace to notice those who are often invisible: the homeless person on the corner, the co-worker who is struggling silently, or the child who feels left out.
- Challenge indifference. Resist the temptation to grow numb to suffering. Instead of saying, “That’s not my problem,” adopt the attitude of Christ, who made our suffering His own.
- Live with eternity in mind. This parable reminds us that our choices now have lasting consequences. Cultivate a lifestyle of mercy and compassion, trusting that what you do for the “least of these” (Mt 25:40) you do for Christ Himself.
