A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend

When Prayer Descends

How do we concretely move from head to heart?

When I lie in my bed, not able to fall asleep because of my many words and worries; when I am preoccupied with all the things that I must do or that can go wrong; when I can't take my mind off my concern for a needy or dying friend – what am I supposed to do? Pray? Fine, but how do I do this?

One simple way is by slowly repeating a particular prayer with as much attentiveness as possible. Focused prayer, first in the mind and then repeated in the heart, becomes easier the more you practice. When you know the “Our Father,” the “Glory Be to God,” or the “Lord, Have Mercy” by heart, you have something to start with. Just by praying those prayers repeatedly. You might like to learn by heart the Twenty-third Psalm (“The Lord is my shepherd…”) or Paul's words about love to the Corinthians, or the Prayer of St. Francis (“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…”). As you lie in bed, drive your car, wait for the bus, or walk your dog, you can slowly let the words of one of these prayers go through your mind down to your heart by trying to listen with your whole being to what you are repeating. You may be distracted by your worries, but if you keep going back to the words of the prayer, you will gradually discover that your worries become less obsessive, your attention becomes more focused, and you really start to enjoy praying. As prayer descends from your mind into the center of your being, you will discover its healing power.

The reading for this Sunday, September 21, the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time is: Luke 16:10-13.

Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

In this passage, Jesus reminds us that faithfulness begins with the small things. If we are honest, trustworthy, and generous in the little responsibilities of life, God will entrust us with greater ones. Conversely, if we are careless or selfish with small matters, we cannot expect to be given more.

Jesus also makes clear that we cannot serve two masters. Wealth and possessions—what He calls “mammon”—can easily take the place of God if we let them dominate our hearts. The question is not whether money and possessions are evil, but whether we allow them to rule us. As disciples, we are called to place our trust in God alone, using worldly goods as tools for service rather than ends in themselves.

This is a challenge in a world that prizes success, wealth, and status. But the gospel calls us back to what matters most: to live faithfully before God, even in the little things, and to serve Him above all else.

Practical Suggestions for Living Out This Passage from the Gospel of Luke:
  1. Practice honesty in small matters
    • Be truthful in everyday interactions—whether it is returning the extra change a cashier gives you or being accurate in your work reports.
  2. Be faithful in commitments
    • Show up on time, keep promises, and follow through with tasks at home and work, no matter how small.
  3. Use money as a servant, not a master
o Make spending and saving decisions prayerfully, asking, “Does this help me serve God and others?”
  4. Tithe or give consistently
    • Setting aside part of your income for the Church or those in need reminds you that wealth belongs to God and is meant for service.
  5. Practice gratitude
    • Thank God daily for the simple blessings in your life—food, shelter, relationships. Gratitude helps prevent greed and entitlement.
  6. Simplify where possible
    • Examine your possessions: Do you own more than you need? Could something be shared, donated, or used for the good of others?
  7. Set boundaries against materialism
    • Limit time spent on shopping apps, advertisements, or social media comparisons that fuel desire for “more.”
  8. Pray for detachment
    • Ask God for the grace to rely on Him, not money, for your security and sense of worth.
Enjoy the rest of your week! Please remember to spend time in quiet reflective prayer focusing on the goodness of the Lord in your life and in this Christian community.

We will see you on Sunday at 10 a.m. for service! If you are out of town, please join us on Facebook Live.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
