A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend by Henri Nouwen
|
Freedom From Letting Go
|
I have noticed in my own life that people I do not like have power over me because I am always thinking about them. They preoccupy me and have control over my thinking. I find myself jealous, resentful, and vengeful. I lose peace. I am holding on to these people as my enemies. Loving our enemies is the way of becoming free of our enemies. We free ourselves by letting go, by loving them, by caring for them. One of the most beautiful things is when we let the enemy go out of our heart by love and forgiveness, we are suddenly free to let that unlimited, all-embracing love of God pour into us. We become a new person every time we forgive an enemy, because we let go of the angry person inside who was holding on to fear. The core of our faith is to be free people – free from the power we give to our enemies, free to love every human being with the divine love that always forgives, seven times seven and seven again.

Arrive to Sunday service prepared to hear God’s word proclaimed.
The reading for this Sunday, September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross is Philippians 2:6-11.
Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.
On this feast, the Church lifts up the Cross not as a sign of defeat, but as the place of Christ’s greatest triumph. St. Paul’s hymn in Philippians 2 gives us a powerful lens to see this mystery.
Paul tells us that Jesus, “though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.” Instead of clinging to power, He chose to empty Himself, to take on the form of a slave, and to become obedient “to the point of death—even death on a cross.”
The Cross is shocking when we see it through the eyes of the world. It is an instrument of torture and humiliation. But through the eyes of faith, the Cross is the throne of Christ. It is there that we see the depth of His humility and the greatness of His love. It is there that the words “God so loved the world” are made flesh.
Because of His humility, Paul tells us, “God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every name.” The way of the Cross—the way of self-emptying love—is not the end. It leads to glory. The Cross is exalted because it is the path through which salvation has entered the world.
For us as Christians, this hymn is both comfort and challenge. It comforts us because Christ has gone before us: He took on our suffering, bore our sins, and transformed the very symbol of death into the tree of life. But it also challenges us to live in His way of humility. To “have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus” means to let go of pride, ambition, or the need to grasp for power, and instead to take the path of service and love.
Today, as we exalt the Cross, we do not glorify suffering itself. We glorify the One who, through the Cross, revealed the greatest love the world has ever known. May our lives, like His, become a living hymn of self-giving love, so that in us too, “every tongue may confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
