A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend
by Henri Nouwen

Beauty in Difference

We all reflect God's love in different ways. Together we are like a mosaic. In a mosaic one stone is bright, another stone is gold, another stone is small. If we look at it closely we can admire the beauty of each stone, but if we step back from it, we can see that all the little stones reveal a beautiful picture and tell a story that none of the stones can tell by itself. Together the different stones reflect the face of God to the world.

The scripture reading for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, May is John 10:27-30. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

In this short yet powerful passage, Jesus reveals the deep intimacy between Himself and His followers. He calls us His sheep—not in a dismissive way, but to highlight our need for His guidance and care. Sheep are known for following their shepherd’s voice, trusting him to lead them to safety, food, and rest. Likewise, Jesus assures us that if we truly belong to Him, we will hear His voice and follow Him.

Jesus promises not only guidance but security—eternal life and divine protection. The phrase “no one can snatch them out of my hand” is not merely comforting; it is profoundly assuring. In a world filled with uncertainty and threats to our peace, Jesus reminds us that nothing can separate us from His care. We are doubly held—by Christ and by the Father. This unity of divine love holds us secure.

Jesus ends with a bold declaration: “The Father and I are one.” It affirms His divinity and the perfect unity of will and mission between Father and Son. To follow Jesus is to live within the heart of the Trinity itself, caught up in divine love and protected by it.

Practical Suggestions for Living Out John 10:27–30
  1. Spend Time Daily Listening for His Voice
    • Jesus says His sheep hear His voice. Make quiet prayer and scripture reading part of your daily rhythm—not just speaking to God, but listening. Start with five minutes of silence after reading a Gospel passage, asking, “Lord, what are You saying to me today?”
  2. Practice Trust Over Fear
    • When fear or anxiety comes, remind yourself: “No one can snatch me out of His hand.” Speak it aloud. Write it on a card or keep it as a phone background. Trust that your life is in God's hands, even in difficulty.
  3. Follow His Lead in Small Daily Choices
    • Following Jesus isn’t only about big life decisions. It's about choosing love, forgiveness, patience, and integrity every day. Before making a decision, ask: “Is this following Jesus, or following my own will?”
  4. Stay Close to the Flock
    • Sheep thrive in community. Don’t try to walk the Christian journey alone. Stay connected to a church or faith-sharing group where you can hear God’s voice together, support one another, and grow in faith.
  5. Live with Eternal Perspective
    • Jesus promises eternal life. Let this truth shape your priorities. Ask: “What will matter in eternity?” Focus less on temporary worries and more on loving God and others well.
  6. Remember Whose You Are
    • In times of doubt or failure, recall Jesus’ words: “I know them.” You are known and loved by the Good Shepherd. Let your identity be rooted not in what you do, but in whose you are.

Enjoy your week rooted in the love, mercy, joy and hope of Jesus!
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
