A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend

So Much Talking

It is so hard to be silent, silent with my mouth, but even more, silent with my heart. There is so much talking going on within me. It seems that I am always involved in inner debates with myself, my friends, my enemies, my supporters, my opponents, my colleagues, and my rivals. But this inner debate reveals how far my heart is from you. If I were simply to rest at your feet and realize that I belong to you and you alone, I would easily stop arguing with all the real and imagined people around me. These arguments show my insecurity, my fear, my apprehensions. You, O Lord, will give me all the attention I need if I would simply stop talking and start listening to you. I know that in the silence of my heart you will speak to me and show me your love. Give me, O Lord, that silence. Let me be patient and grow slowly into this silence in which I can be with you. Amen.

The reading for this Sunday, September 7, the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, is Luke 14:25-33.

Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

Jesus turns to the large crowds following Him and says something that shocks us: “Whoever does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.” At first glance, these words sound harsh. But Jesus is not calling us to despise those we love. Rather, He is speaking about priorities. To follow Him fully, He must be at the very center of our lives—above every relationship, possession, and even our own self-interest.

Jesus goes on to speak of carrying the cross. Discipleship is not a casual walk; it is a costly commitment. Just as a builder counts the cost before laying a foundation, or a king calculates before going into battle, we must consider what it truly means to follow Christ. It means surrendering our will to His, even when it is difficult, inconvenient, or unpopular.

This passage confronts us with a deep question: Is Jesus truly first in my life? If He is, then everything else—family, work, possessions, ambitions—falls into its rightful place. When Christ is our first love, we can love others more authentically, because our love flows from His. When Christ is our foundation, possessions no longer possess us. When Christ is our guide, even the crosses we carry become paths to life.

Practical Applications
  • Examine your priorities: This week, take time in prayer to ask, “What competes with Jesus in my life? Where do I struggle to put Him first?”
  • Carry your daily cross: Instead of seeing inconveniences, struggles, or sacrifices as burdens, view them as opportunities to walk with Christ.
  • Practice detachment: Choose one small possession or habit that may have too strong a hold on you and let it go as an act of freedom in Christ.
  • Strengthen love rightly: Remember that loving Jesus above all does not diminish love for family and friends—it purifies and deepens it.
Following Jesus is demanding, but it is also freeing. He calls us not to half-measures, but to wholehearted discipleship. When we put Him first, we discover that everything else falls into place—and we begin to live with the joy and freedom of true disciples of Christ.

Please pray for peace in our world and in our hearts.

We will see you on Sunday for service at 10:00 a.m.! If you are on vacation or out of town, please join us on Facebook Live.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
