A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend
by Henri Nouwen

Offer God Your
Imperfections

It is through our broken, vulnerable, mortal ways of being that the healing power of the eternal God becomes visible to us. We are called each day to present to the Lord the whole of our lives—our joys as well as sorrows, our successes as well as failures, our hopes as well as fears. We are called to do so with our limited means, our stuttering words and halting expressions. In this way we will come to know in mind and heart the unceasing prayer of God’s Spirit in us. Our many prayers are in fact confessions of our inability to pray. But they are confessions that enable us to perceive the merciful presence of God.

The reading for Trinity Sunday, June 15 is Romans 5:1-5. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

On this Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we are invited into the profound mystery of the God who is three in one—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While the doctrine of the Trinity may seem abstract or difficult to grasp, St. Paul’s words in Romans 5 offer us a tangible and deeply personal experience of this divine mystery. The Trinity is not just a theological formula; it is the very life of God shared with us in grace.
  1. Peace with God through Jesus Christ (The Son)
Paul begins with a powerful affirmation: “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” This peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the restoration of our relationship with God. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the Son, we are reconciled with the Father. The Trinity is not distant—it enters our brokenness and offers us healing. Jesus is the face of God's mercy, the bridge between heaven and earth, drawing us into communion with the Father.
  2. Standing in Grace before the Father (The Source of Love)
We now “stand” in grace—a word that signifies stability, permanence, and favor. Through the Son, we are welcomed into the presence of the Father not as strangers or enemies, but as beloved children. The Father, source of all life and love, offers us the gift of Himself. Grace is the constant outpouring of the Father’s goodness, sustaining us even in our afflictions.
  3. Hope through the Spirit’s Presence (The Holy Spirit)
Our hope “does not disappoint.” Why? Because “the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” This is not abstract love, but a real, living presence—God's Spirit alive in us. The Spirit gives us strength in suffering, endurance in trial, and the assurance that we are not alone. It is the Spirit who helps us to cry, “Abba, Father,” who brings the love of Christ into the depths of our being.
The Trinity is not only a mystery to contemplate—it is a reality to live:
  • Live in peace with others, as Christ has brought us peace with God.
  • Stand in grace—let that be your identity. You are held in the Father’s love, even when life is uncertain.
  • Let the Spirit lead—especially in affliction. Hope will not disappoint because the Spirit sustains you with divine love.
On this feast, we celebrate not just who God is, but what God has done—and is doing—in our lives. The Trinity is not far off. The Trinity dwells within us.

We pray for all of our dads, both living and deceased. Happy Father’s Day!
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
