A Spiritual Reflection for Your Weekend
by Henri Nouwen

God is a God of the Present

The real enemies of our life are the “oughts” and the “ifs.” They pull us backward into the unalterable past and forward into the unpredictable future. But real life takes place in the here and the now. God is a God of the present. God is always in the moment, be that moment hard or easy, joyful or painful. When Jesus spoke about God, he always spoke about God as being where and when you are. “When you see me, you see God. When you hear me, you hear God.” God is not someone who was or will be, but the One who is, and who is for me in the present moment. That’s why Jesus came to wipe away the burden of the past and the worries of the future. He wants us to discover God right where we are, here and now.

The reading for the Fifth Sunday of Easter, May 18, is Revelation 2:1-5a. Here is a synopsis and reflection of the reading.

This short but powerful message to the church in Ephesus reminds us that it’s possible to be doctrinally sound, morally upright, and spiritually active, yet still be in danger of spiritual decline. The Ephesian church was praised for its hard work, endurance, and rejection of evil. But Christ had one serious concern: they had lost their first love.
  1. The Danger of Losing Our First Love
In the beginning of our faith journey, many of us experienced a deep love for Jesus — a passionate desire to follow Him, pray, worship, and serve. Over time, however, this love can fade. Our faith can become more about duty than devotion, more about maintaining appearances than cultivating intimacy with Christ. This warning is not just for the Ephesians; it is for all of us.
  2. Christ Sees the Heart, Not Just the Hands
Jesus acknowledges the outward signs of their faith — their perseverance, rejection of false teaching, and good works. But He goes deeper. He looks at the heart. Are our actions flowing from love, or are we just going through the motions?
  3. The Call to Remember and Return
Jesus gives us a threefold remedy:
    • Remember: Reflect on where we once were in our relationship with Him.
    • Repent: Acknowledge our coldness of heart and ask God to rekindle the fire.
    • Return: Do again the works we did when we first fell in love with Christ — pray earnestly, love generously, forgive readily, worship passionately.

We look forward to seeing you this weekend!
May the joy, peace, and love of Jesus dwell in our world.
Love,
Fr. Dale & Pastor Mark
