Open to all married couples, Marriage Enrichment will meet tonight, Friday, November 4 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the church. This will be an excellent opportunity to grow in your relationship with your spouse through the person of Jesus through a presentation and small group discussion questions! Dinner will be served!

Men of PWC, this Saturday, November 5, is your opportunity to grow in your Christian faith and support other men in experiencing Christ through the Brothers’ Ministry. We are meeting from 9:00 am to 10:30 am in Building 4-12. Deacon Dennis Paschke will share about how Recovery Café works.

The Women’s Bible Study is also meeting this Saturday, November 5 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am in the church. Our bible study will be on John 11:17 and Luke 10:38-42. We will be studying Mary and Martha in scripture, the effect they had in the life of Jesus, and how we can incorporate the teachings for today. We will be serving a wonderful breakfast.

Recovery Café is opening soon, and we are very excited! Originally, we had plan to have our Grand Opening and Fund Raiser on Friday, November 4, but due to delays we have now scheduled our Grand Opening and Fund Raiser for Friday, December 2 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Tickets will be going on sale this Sunday; November 6 and the cost is only $50.00.

Thank you to all who took shoe boxes!
The deadline to return the shoe boxes is November 13, this is the absolute last day to return them as we must deliver the shoeboxes to the drop-off site on November 13. If you can return them before November 13 that would be great! PWC community members have returned 75 boxes out of the 300 that were taken. Just put them in the church by the north facing windows. The School of Prayer continues next Wednesday, November 9 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. This is the last class, but you can still join us! The School of Prayer is exploring the different ways and styles of prayer and why we are called to prayer as Christians. The goal of the School of Prayer is to explain and experience how one can have an intimate relationship with God through prayer.

The Praise and Worship Center Executive Board will have an opening beginning January 1, 2023. If you are willing to serve, please pick up an application this coming weekend. The term for each board member is three years. The job description of the board is to oversee the policies, annual budget, and the direction of PWC. The expectation of each board member is to attend a monthly meeting (usually on the fourth Sunday of the month), be registered at PWC, be active in ministry, and be willing to participate in special events and meetings held by the board. All names of qualified candidates will be put into a hat and in biblical tradition be drawn by lot. We currently have a very active and supportive board. If you are willing and believe you can help guide our church family, we encourage you to fill out an application.

Election Day is this Tuesday, November 8. Make sure you vote in the upcoming mid-term elections. Christians need to do their part at making the world a better place.

The Continuum of Life

A world without ancestors is lonely. I am so grateful for the elders in my family who introduced me to the continuums in life. It matters how we understand our sojourn in this reality. If we consider our lives to be comprised of segments separated by a dash that encompasses birth and death dates, we will be inconsolable when trauma truncates our realities and delays our destinations. But, if we consider ourselves to be part of a continuum of life that does not end with death, but transitions to a life after life, our perspectives can change.
The community of the ancestors, already inhabiting the life beyond life, kept in constant contact with us. They sent messages and intervened when necessary. They prayed with me and whispered warnings. Whether we call them ancestors or elders, only those women and men who led good lives in the physical realm are considered to be wise guides in the spiritual realm. In some African cultures, they are called elders, “the old ones.” Any elder represents the entire legal and mystical authority of the lineage. For me, ancestors, living and dead elders, commanded my respect and were always present, abiding and guiding me.
I believe that one of the essential events that we must walk through is the experience of the passion and death with someone we love, with someone we are bonded to, with someone we really care about. When my mother passed over, I had no doubt that she built a bridge—I don’t know what other words to use—she built a bridge and she took some of me over with her, and she sent some of herself back. I understand now at a deeper level what Jesus meant by “unless I go, the Spirit cannot come” (John 16:7). I think the normal pattern in history is for each generation to pass over, and to build the bridges of love and trust for the next generation coming afterwards. The all-important thing, for all of us, is that we be bonded somewhere. If you have never loved, there is no bridge.
When you walk through someone’s passion with them, through someone’s learning to let go, and pass over with them in a moment of death, I’m convinced it’s then and only then that you really are prepared to understand the resurrection. . . All Jesus came to teach us, and only needed to teach us, was how to walk through the great mystery, and not be put to shame and to trust that God is on the other side of it.
